British Equalities minister to visit India

The UK Minister for Equalities and Criminal Information, Lynne Featherstone, MP, is visiting India from Wednesday 15 June to Friday 17 June.

Featherstone is visiting India and Nepal in her role as the UK Ministerial Champion on violence against women and girls, and gender equality.

On her visit, she will highlight the UK Government’s commitment to transforming the lives of women and girls and share UK experience of tackling inequality. She will use this trip to learn about some of the key challenges facing women in India and identify opportunities for greater UK-India collaboration on the global issue of violence against women.

Featherstone will have meetings with Government of India Ministers and key officials, civil society and the media. She will spend a day in Bihar to have first-hand interactions with adolescent girls from poor communities to understand how education has changed their lives. She will get an opportunity to see how women’s self help groups are playing a key role in empowering women to tackle social issues including domestic violence, and visit some of the State Government’s initiatives, including a telephone helpline centre for women in Patna.

Before leaving for India Featherstone said: “Every day in every country women experience fear, or the aftermath of horrific crimes against them. These are real women; women and girls as victims at the sharp end of the statistics.  This is a global problem.”

“Tackling violence against women and girls needs action – and the action we take collectively needs to make a real difference to women and girls who have suffered (or who are at risk of suffering) violence to ensure they can achieve their full potential and live fulfilled lives.”

“Transforming the lives of women and girls is at the heart of the UK’s vision for global development. Through our development cooperation programme in India, we want to work with Indian partners to get more girls to schools, better access to finance, jobs and healthcare for women.”
